Dear Students,
I want you to read two books over the summer break. Ideally, they will be books that have also been made into movies.
Four Weddings and a Funeral and Dr. Zhivago are your first two choices. (You could also read both of them. They are not so difficult.) I recommend that you start reading the book, note the names of the characters, watch the DVD, go back to the book and finish reading. Write a summary of the book on the blog. Take notes from the movie, so you can do a movie critique later in fall semester.
Nelson Mandela. This book is about a great South African hero. If you follow these steps, you'll be able to understand more about his life.
1. Go to the Wiki history page and read a little about him. This will introduce the book to you.

2. Go to Amazon.com and key in Long Walk to Freedom. You will find a summary, an Editorial Review, of his autobiography. (Scroll down the screen.)
3. Start the book.
4. Watch "Invictus," a movie about Nelson Mandela. Take notes. You can critique this movie later in Fall Semester.
5. Google to Ladymith Black Mombaza on youtube. Listen to some of their music to give you a South African flavor.
6. Go back to the book and read. Take notes on the main characters.
7. Summarize on the blog.

Charles was a man who had a lot of girlfriends, but they were not right woman to marry for him. One day, he met a beautiful woman. Her name was Carrie. Charles thought she was the right woman to marry. However, Carrie married another man, so Charles tried to give up her. After that, he decided to marry another woman. At the wedding, he was surprised because there was Carrie and she said she got divorce from her husband. Charles was confused. Last, he didn't marry another woman. Charles and Carried were not married, but they were in love.

Nelson Mandela was the first black president in South Africa. Before he became a president, he overcame many things. For a long time, South Africa was controlled by white people and black South Africans were difficult to live. To change South Africa, he became a member of the ANC and worked very hard. However, he was arrested by white people and he had been in prison for more than twenty years. After he was let out of prison, he was elected president of South Africa. He is considered the world's greatest leader and loved by many people.

Today, his name is very popular all over the world because of his desperate exertions for South Africa. He was the first president of South Africa. Before his assumption of his presidency he arrested for thirty years. In 1950s, South Africa was a rich country in gold and diamonds. However for black african, it didn't matter. White people controled the country, black people weren't allowed even go to ceffe. Many shops signed "white only". Nelson Mandela decided to change South Africa, And he did. This is not his own life's story but also the story of the history of South Africa.

Charles who was a main character in this book was handsome boy and he had a lot of girlfriends, but he didn't find out the right woman to marry. When he was looking for the right woman in his friends' wedding, he met Carrie who was a beautiful woman. Although they fell in love soon, they didn't marry. After that, Charles mat Carrie again in his friends' wedding and he knew that she was going to get married to another partner. He began to worry about his wedding because his friends and even Carrie got married to their partner. This book is an attractive story which makes a reader wants to know whether Charles can get married to someone.

Nelson Mandela lived in the times when white people controlled black. Actually, South Africans could live without hardship, but they had to work hard to live more than white people because there were apartheid and they couldn't go anywhere without a pass. Nelson Mandela hated it. He thought black people should have a right as well as white. He learned about the law and life of black people. He had devoted his life to do away with apartheid since he joined ANC. His life wasn't so easy and he passed through a hardship. He was arrested about twenty seven because he opposed to apartheid, however, people considered him the best person as a president after he was released from the prison. He had lived for South Africans' peace even after becoming the first black president in South Africa.

There were a lot of kinds of love in the story,which was described around Charles.
He was an attractive man so had no difficlty in looking for girl friends; however, they weren't right women to marry him.He always went to his friends' weddings and were late.
He met a beautiful woman who was named Carrie at the first wedding.
Hardly had he saw her when he absorbed in her
and loved each othehr as usual but she left him while he was wondering if he would marry her.He regreted doing that and attempted to attract her at weddings he went to.He saw many kinds of love there and a funeral of his friend,which made him think about love and his love became one of love in the story;
He noticed true love through four weddings and a funeral.

This book described Nelson Mandela,who confronted apartheid for peace.
There were exsited many black people who suffering discrimination;they couldn't do almost all things without the government's permission,where he took a firm stand against racial discrimination.
Every time he took action against apartheid,he was arrested and felt pain;
however,he didn't surrender to them at all, which made a lot people fight for peace;
as a result, he finally succeeded with his great companions.Mandela was elected first president of South Africa later.He hoped all people would peacefully live in the world and his hope has come true and he's still working for peace for nobody to suffer from any troubles so he is famous,popular and loved by a lot of people in the world.

The main character, Charles had plenty of girlfriends ever, but he couldn't find a right woman to marry. He always goes to his friend's weddings, never his own. When he attended his friend's wedding as usual, he finally met a beautiful woman, Carrie. They fell in love each other; but Carrie married another man, Hamish and Charles got to marry another woman, Henrietta. However, Charles made a big decision at his wedding in response to Carrie's words. Charles and Carrie didn't marry, but they found a true love and best partner in life.

However, white people didn't like his activity and arrested him. He was in prison for twenty seven years. After he was released from prison, he never give up changing South Africa. It is a story about how four people, who Yury, Tonya, Lara and Pasha lived during difficult and hard situation, which under Russian Revolution. Yury began to live with Tonya and her family after Yury's parents died, and they married, but Yury determined to go to WW1 as a doctor. Alomost at the same time, Lara and Pasha married, but Pasha also decided to go to WW1 leaving Lara at home, so Lara made up her mind to be trained as a nurse and go to look for Pasha. At the battle front, Yury and Lara met, then they became close, and began to live together; in spite of this, they were apart. After some years, Yury found Lara, but, sad to say, Yury had a heart attack and died when he tried to run toward Lara.

Nelson Mandela is a very patient and strong-willed person because he didn't give up his mind to abolish the apartheid system; nevertheless he was put in prisons for no less than 27 years. He wanted to change South Africa, so he joined ANC, but he was arrested because he did movements against the apartheid. After he was released a prison, he was received a Novel Peace Prize and he was elected to the first black president in South Africa. Now he retired his career as a politician; however his great achievements will be passed down generation to generation.

One day, when he attened his friend's wedding party he met a beautiful American woman whoes name was Carry. They fell in love soon although she got married another man. Futhermore Charles tried to marry another woman but he gave up because he knew Carry's divorce. Finally they were not marry but got true love.

Charles was thirty years old, good-looking, and always late. He often attended friend's weddings and got to know many kinds of love. On the first wedding, he met an beautiful American woman named Carrie and they got fall in love soon. Although they couldn't marry at that time because Charles didn't have the confidence whether Carrie was the right woman to marry with. On the other friend's wedding, he met Carrie again, and then she told him that she was going to marry with another guy. That made Charles shocked, although he was also asked to get marry from another woman. On the day of Carrie's wedding, his friend passed away and he began to think what does the marriage mean to him and he decided to marry with the woman, Henrietta. On his wedding day, Carrie showed up infront of Charles and what she said is she got divorce with her hasband. It was only 5 min before his weeding. He got confused but he canceled his marriage and chose Carrie as his lover. Throgh his all experience at weddings and funerals made him find true love.

Nelson Mandela was born in 1918 in a beautiful small village of South Africa. When he was nine years old, his father passed away, then he and his mother moved to his uncle's house. Luckly, his uncle was the king of Thembu people, so he could learned the history of the African people and the arrival of white people by listening conversations between his uncle and important people. Nelson's great leadership and smart thinking had been trained since then. He spend his childhood by colony of white people. That fact mede Nelson came to think he didn't want to be defeated by white people. He worked on black people's right through his life and he got in and out from jail many times. Totally, he was there for thirty years. Even he had had a hard time, his didn't give up to change his mother country and strong didn't go away, above all his mind got stronger than before he came in jail. Now, South Africa has still many problems, although like Nelson changed his country, I believe South Africa can change more better than now in the future.

The man is written in this story is Nelson Mandela who brought freedom to South Africa as a president of this country. He grew up to very brilliantly, and he learned himself how difficult the real life of people in south Africa as a young lawyer. He had entered prison because of the movement he joined at ANC which was hated by white people and spent 27 years of his life there. However this experience was not only bad part of his life. Finally, he could be a first black president and continued to insist on the mixture of white and black, and at last he brought freedom of South Africans.

Charls is the main character in this story. He was invited a lot of his friends’ weddings in the story, but when he woke up, he often said “fuck” because he was always late.He also had lots of friends and girlfriends. At the first wedding, he met a women who was really beautiful. Since then, he had fell in love with her. But she married another men, Hamish at the third wedding for Charls. At the fourth wedding was his own one, but when they pledged their love, he finally confessed his true women who he wanted to marry was different. After the wedding, the women who he wanted to marry, Carrie came to him and they finally pledged their love not in front of priest (because they didn’t marry).

People all around the world know have heard his name before. He received Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. He was born in South Africa which has big racial problem. He thought everyone has to be equal so he stand up to stop Apartheid though his life. he was arrested many times and iprisoned long time. Despite these difficulties, we finally became a prim minister of South Africa as first black people in 1994 and South Africa was changed. After his retirement, people still love him.

English, single man Charles had some girlsfriends before but he hasn't see the one who he really wanna marry with. When he went to Angus and Laura's wedding who are his friends, he met American woman, Carrie for the first time. they spend together at that night but he hesitated to get marry with her. His another friends held wedding ceremony few month later. Then he met Carrie again but she has already find her partner. He tried to give up her and he decieded to get married with another woman. However he didn't. At last Charles and Carrie don't get married but they have a child and speend together.

Nelson Mandela is really famous for his hardwork towards apartheid. He worked really hard towards many problem for Africans better life in the future. When he first born, he was named Rolihlahla which means "toublemaker". Nelson worked for ANC(The African National Congress) and workded for better conditions for black people in South Africa. In 1962, he was arrested on the way back to Johannesburg. Several years of arresting, he came out of prison and became Primeminister of South Africa. Then he changed South Africa. Even though he retired his place, everyone knows about him and likes him.
Dr.Zhivago
This story takes place in the early 20th centry, during WWI and Russian Revolution. And many wars were still going on. He worked as a doctor and lived purely. Since he lost his parents, he was brought up with different parent, but they loved him a lot.
There were a girl nameed Lara who fell in love with Pasha, but that love was easy broked. As soon As the war ended, they were separated. After the long separation, they were happen to meet again, and they soon came together. However, they had to become separately again. Eight years later, when Zhivago was in Moscaw, he happenly saw Lara on the street. He tried to get off the train and chase after Lara, but since he had a serious problem with his heart, he had a heart attack and he died. His long life had ended.
